300k patient records compromised in February — 4 insights

Healthcare Analytics News compiled the total number of healthcare-related cyber incidents for the month of February, finding 300,000 patient records were put at risk through an array of security incidents.

Here's what you should know.

1. There were 24 security incidents putting 300,000 patient records at risk in February.

2. Hacking incidents were most prevalent throughout the month. There were approximately 154,770 records compromised because of hacking. An incident at Albany, N.Y.-based St. Peter's Surgery & Endoscopy Center compromised 134,512 records.

3. Unauthorized access/disclosure incidents were the second most prevalent. Approximately 136,759 records were exposed as a result.

4. Improper disposal accounted for 9,956 patient records being exposed, and 1,827 records were exposed through a stolen laptop.
