Antimicrobial film drape receives Frost & Sullivan award for innovation in SSI prevention: 4 insights

Covalon Technologies' MediClear PreOp received Frost & Sullivan's 2018 North American Surgical Site Infection Prevention New Product Innovation Award.

Here are four things to know.

1. MediClear PreOp is a novel preoperative antimicrobial silicone film drape designed to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination of the patient's skin prior to surgery by providing continuous antimicrobial activity.

2. MediClear PreOp is self-adherent. The product's polyurethane barrier film acts as a protective barrier, isolating a procedural site from external contamination. Its silicone adhesive is intended to provide a rapid bactericidal and fungicidal effect against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, preventing their regrowth for up to seven days during wear. MediClear PreOp is designed to be breathable and transparent.

3. The product is available in three sizes to protect skin for cardiothoracic, orthopedic and plastic surgeries.

4. Surgical site infection is one of the most common postoperative complications and the most frequently reported healthcare-associated infection, occurring in three to five percent of the estimated 234.2 million annual surgical procedures performed worldwide. It is fatal in about three percent of cases, according to a Frost & Sullivan report.
