ECRI Institute to continue guideline database shut down by HHS, launch site with new features this fall

ECRI Institute, the independent nonprofit organization that developed and maintained the national Guideline Clearinghouse since its inception, will continue to provide access to the guidelines

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality announced the NGC, a database hosting over 20 years of data covering clinical practice guidelines, would be shut down due to cuts in President Donald Trump’s federal budget July 16.

ECRI Institute's guideline resource will provide a centralized repository of current, vetted clinical practice guideline summaries. An interim website with additional features is set to launch this fall, including advanced search capabilities, an enhanced user interface and support for guideline implementation and decision-making.

The initial site will allow users to search and retrieve ECRI’s summarizations of clinical practice guidelines, and will include unbiased evaluations of the guidelines in line with the National Academy of Medicine's standards for trustworthiness.

“Clinicians want to know what stands behind a particular recommendation, and whether they can trust that recommendation,” said Jane Jue, MD, ECRI Institute's medical director. “Trustworthy guidance is the real value that we will be providing.”
