CMS will now begin to cover annual screenings for alcohol misuse and depression, according to agency decision memos.
CMS determined that the evidence is adequate to conclude that screening for depression in adults and screening and behavioral counseling to reduce alcohol misuse is reasonable and necessary. The screenings were also recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
CMS will cover annual screening for depression for Medicare beneficiaries in primary care settings that have staff-assisted depression care supports in place to assure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and follow-up.
In addition, the agency will cover annual alcohol screening and up to four brief, face-to-face, behavioral counseling interventions per year for those that screen positive, including pregnant women.
