A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine and cited by Medscape examined the number of healthcare data breaches associated with mobile devices.

Researchers conducted a retrospective review of 1,138 healthcare breaches reported to HHS between 2009 and 2017.

1. The main causes of data breaches included theft by outsiders or unknown parties, mailing mistakes and theft by former or current employees.

2. Hacking and other information technology incidents exposed the highest number of records.
