Patient burn rate drops & 5 other key findings from Q1 2019 ASC quality report

Patient burn rates dropped in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the fourth quarter of 2018, according to the ASC Quality Collaboration's latest ASC quality report

The report's data was collected from 1,664 ASCs (1,023 multispecialty and 641 single-specialty) in every state except Vermont from Jan. 1 through March 31. Organizations such as the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America, Westchester, Ill.-based Regent Surgical Health and Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates agreed to collect and submit data.

The rate of incidents is calculated per 1,000 ASC admissions.

Six key statistics:

1. All-cause hospital transfer/admission
Fourth quarter 2018: .873
First quarter 2019: .929

2. Wrong site, side, patient, procedure, implant events
Fourth quarter 2018: .021
First quarter 2019: .025

3. Patient burns
Fourth quarter 2018: .017
First quarter 2019: .011

4. Patient falls
Fourth quarter 2018: .116
First quarter 2019: .146

5. All-cause emergency department visit within one day of discharge
Fourth quarter 2018: .873
First quarter 2019: .929

6. All-cause unplanned hospital admission within one day of discharge
Fourth quarter 2018: .35
First quarter 2019: .37
