Wrong-site surgery & transfer rates drop in ASCs for Q3 — 6 key statistics

All-cause hospital transfer and wrong-site surgery rates dropped in the third quarter compared to the second quarter of 2018, according to the ASC Quality Collaboration's latest ASC quality report

The report's data was collected from 1,600 ASCs (993 multispecialty and 607 single-specialty) in every state except Vermont from July 1, 2018, through Sept. 30, 2018. Organizations such as the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America, Westchester, Ill.-based Regent Surgical Health and Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates agreed to collect and submit data.

The rate of incidents is calculated per 1,000 ASC admissions.

1. All-cause hospital transfer/admission
Second quarter: .944

2. Wrong site, side, patient, procedure, implant events
Second quarter: .025
Third quarter: .023

3. Patient burns
Second quarter: .015
Third quarter: .023

4. Patient falls
Second quarter: .096
Third quarter: .121

5. All-cause emergency department visit within one day of discharge
Second quarter: .86
Third quarter: .97

6. All-cause unplanned hospital admission within one day of discharge
