The publication Mass Device has released the following list of the five most innovative med-tech CEOs.
Ary Guthart, Intuitive Surgical. He was part of a team that developed the foundation technology for computer-enhanced surgery. In his new role as CEO, he has increased top-line performance 34 percent, opening the da Vinci robot for several new procedures.
William Hawkins, Medtronic. Mr. Hawkins, who just retired, started the company's added focus in chronic disease management and entered intriguing markets like regenerative medicine and bariatrics. He also expanded company footholds in heart failure, diabetes and deep-brain stimulation.
Michael Minogue, Abiomed. On his watch, the company introduced the Impella line of tiny pumps that provide circulatory support for heart surgery. Clinical research data supporting Impella devices helped boost company sales by almost 20 percent.
Michael Mussallem, Edwards Lifesciences. He has hewed to Edwards' core expertise, replacement heart valves, but the company's Sapien transcatheter heart valve is a potentially paradigm-shifting technology. The FDA is expected to approve Sapien later this year.
Amar Sawhney, Ocular Therapeutix. He has leveraged his research in hydrogel technology into six companies over the years. Ocular Therapeutix uses hydrogels in its ReSure Ocular Bandage for protecting corneal incisions. The bandage is applied as a liquid and eventually breaks down into tears.
