Group Purchasing Organizations Ready For Global Location Numbers

Group purchasing organizations are prepared to adopt Global Location Numbers to identify healthcare provider locations, according to a Health Industry Group Purchasing Association news release.

HIGPA's Board of Directors said they are now ready to identify precise locations for every healthcare provider in the United States through GLNs. The announcement came months ahead of the healthcare industry's schedule, which had assigned a Dec. 31, 2011 deadline.

Currently, there is no uniform standard to identify the location of healthcare providers or medical products within the healthcare supply chain, according to the release. With this location system in place, however, the United States will be better equipped to locate necessary providers and supplies, particularly in a public health crisis, according to the release.
