Medical Devices Lead in Total Massachusetts Exports

In Massachusetts, the export of medical devices represents approximately 10 percent of all U.S. medical equipment sold abroad and grew nearly twice as fast as state exports as a whole, according to a Boston Globe news report.

The analysis was conducted by consulting firm Deloitte & Touche. The company's study also showed Massachusetts employs the second-highest number of employees in the medical device sector, second only to California.

Notably, the analysis also revealed venture-backed medical device start-up companies in Massachusetts raised $286 million last year, representing approximately 12 percent of total U.S. venture capital investment in the medical device industry. By comparison, Massachusetts comprises a little more than 2 percent of the total U.S. population.
