Oakland, Calif.-based Highland Health was fined $39,187 by California state for several quality-related incidents, including failure to develop an endoscopy cleaning program. Read more.

Private equity firm purchases Illinois medical condos that includes ASC
California-based private equity firm IRA Capital purchased a 40,000-square-foot medical office condominium building in Illinois and converted it into a medical office building. IRA Capital showed the condo group the difference in valuation between the individual condos and the building as a whole, leading to the acquisition.

UnitedHealth aims to boost Optum's market presence
Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group CEO David Wichmann suggested the company is poised to further expand Optum's ambulatory platform during the company's first quarter earnings call. OptumHealth CEO Andrew Hayek said the OptumCare platform is tightly tied to the healthcare industry's consumer-centric evolution. "We're positioned to be the leading high-value medical group and ambulatory care organization in the country with an ambition to serve 75 markets," Mr. Hayek said.

Carolina Digestive Health Associates employee shared 100 patients' data with fraud suspects
Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolina Digestive Health Associates is notifying patients that a former employee stole their personal data. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department informed CDHA Jan. 10 that a CDHA employee had stolen patients' personal information. CDHA fired the employee involved. Read more.

Goshen Health opens outpatient surgery center
Goshen (Ind.) Health's outpatient surgery center was deemed fully functional April 19. The surgery center was under development for two years. Over those two years, the center went through renovations, an accreditation and licensure process as well as insurer negotiations.

Walmart enlists Emory Healthcare as care plan, joint replacement provider
Walmart added Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare to its Centers of Excellence network and selected the system as an Accountable Care Plan provider for its metro-Atlanta associates. Walmart associates at 55 Walmart, Sam's Club and Walmart Distribution Center stores in metropolitan Atlanta can now choose the Emory Accountable Care Plan as their primary healthcare plan.

Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis to shift entirely to outpatient services
Shriners Hospital for Children in Minneapolis is planning to shift away from hospital care to focus on outpatient services and same-day surgeries. The hospital nearly closed in 2003 as part of a systemwide restructuring. The facility will not close and will continue to provide same-day services, which constitutes the bulk of its care.
