The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has proposed to increase licensing fees on surgery centers in the state, according to an ASCA report.
The proposed amendment would increase the licensing fee from $700 every three years to $4,000 every three years. According to the Maryland Ambulatory Surgery Association, the fee could adversely affect the state's surgery centers, many of which are small businesses running on tight budgets.
"ASCs in Maryland deliver safe, high-quality surgical care to the residents of our state at substantially lower costs to the state and patients as compared to hospitals," said MASA President Andrea Hyatt. "The proposed fee increase will represent a large increase in expenses for ASCs and will reduce their ability to keep costs down for patients."
MASA is drafting written comments to the proposed rule. Comments on the rule will be accepted through Aug. 27.
