Providence Hospital in Columbia, S.C., has announced it will cut nearly 60 jobs because of changes in the healthcare environment leading to a shift towards outpatient care, according to a Myrtle Beach Online report.
The latest round of reductions will save the hospital $5.8 million this year. The cuts become because of a shift from inpatient to outpatient care, as well as reduced payments for hospital and physician services and the growing number of uninsured patients because of the economy, according to president and CEO George Zara.
Providence has approximately 2,000 employees in the Columbia area, spread across two hospitals, 13 physician practices, several rehabilitation centers, three sleep centers and a chest-pain center.
