6 Ways to Make an ASC Attractive to Non-Partnering Surgeons

Montgomery Surgery Center, a 4-OR ASC in Rockville, Md., co-owned by Surgical Care Affiliates and eight physician-investors. Much of its volume comes from non-investing physicians. Alan Kravitz, MD, a general surgeon and one of the investing partners, discusses how the center attracts physicians.

1. Be efficient. Physicians hate waiting around. Cases should not run over their allotted time. This involves constantly streamlining the schedule.

2. Share block times.
Investing physicians should be prepared to share preferred block times with non-investors.

3. Contract with all payors.
The center has contracts with virtually every payor, which makes billing easier. It allows for "one-stop shopping."

4. Employ top-notch staff. Surgeons will come back and use the center when they are enthusiastic about the staff.

5. Make sure patients are satisfied. The center constantly monitors patient satisfaction because it does make a difference in surgeons' choice of ASC.

6. Provide a path to ownership. While many non-investing physicians prefer not being partners, some will want to have that as an option.
