UnitedHealth released its annual value-based care report, which showed employer-sponsored and individual ACOs perform better on 87 percent of the top quality measures than non-ACOs.
The data is based on the 110,000 physicians and 1,100 hospitals with which UnitedHealth has a value-based relationship, and 15 million UnitedHealthcare members who sought care from those providers in 2017.
Here are five statistics.
1. In UnitedHealth's Medicare network, $90 million in bonuses was awarded to physicians for quality compliance and better senior care.
2. UnitedHealth observed 17 percent fewer hospital admissions for employer-sponsored and individual ACOs than for non-ACOs.
3. Employer-sponsored and individual ACOs corresponded with a 10 percent increase in visits with primary care physicians.
4. Members receiving care through Medicare ACOs were 13 percent less likely to use the ER.
5. UnitedHealth estimates $75 billion of its payments will go to healthcare providers with value-based care relationships by the end of 2020. It paid $64 billion to such providers in 2017.
