4 barriers to value-based care adoption

Value-based care is gaining popularity as an alternative to the fee-for-service based model, according to Business Insider Intelligence's digital health ecosystem report.

According to respondents, the top impediment to value-based care adoption was provider engagement, at 32 percent. Patient engagement followed closely behind at 28 percent, with technology/infrastructure and analytics being challenges for 24 percent and 17 percent of respondents, respectively.

In 2021, it's projected that value-based care payment programs will account for 46 percent of the market, while fee-for-service payment programs will comprise 49 percent.

According to the report, the prevalence of value-based care payment systems has increased dramatically since 2011.
