75 popular benchmarking stats in 2018 — Specialty procedures, case revenue & more

 

The following is a collection of the most popular benchmarking statistics that appeared on Becker's ASC Review:

ASC facilities

VMG Health's 2018 Multi-Specialty ASC Benchmarking Study is based on an analysis of more than 275 licensed freestanding ASCs, covering more than 1.3 million cases.

Here is the median square footage per facility in each U.S. region:

Most ASCs are urban and for-profit, according to a Medicare Payment Advisory Commission analysis of 2017 CMS data. Here are statistics on the percent of urban, rural, for-profit, nonprofit or government-owned ASCs:

Specialty procedures in ASCs:

Surgery centers with more than two specialties accounted for 30 percent of ASCs billing Medicare in 2016, and single-specialty gastroenterology centers accounted for 22 percent, according to The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission's March 2018 report to Congress.

The report defines a single-specialty ASC as one with more than 67 percent of its Medicare claims in one clinical specialty and a multispecialty ASC as one with more than 67 percent of its Medicare claims in more than one clinical specialty. The sum of multispecialty percentages doesn't equal 100 due to rounding. Here's a breakdown on the specialties that billed Medicare in 2016:

Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology and ophthalmology

Here are statistics on ASC case mix by specialty from VMG Health's Multi-Specialty ASC Intellimarker 2018:

Ophthalmology
AAAHC's benchmarking study is based on clinical studies of YAG laser posterior capsulotomy surgeries between January 2018 and June 2018. The study included 25 organizations with a combined 15,788 YAG laser posterior capsulotomies surgeries per year.

33. Eighty-eight percent of patients wait less than one month after scheduling YAG laser surgery before undergoing the procedure.

34. All patients resume daily living within a week of undergoing YAG laser surgery.

35. Eighty-nine percent of patients reported improved vision after YAG laser surgery in an ASC.

36. Ninety-nine percent of patients say they're comfortable while undergoing YAG laser surgery in the ASC.

37. Ninety-eight percent are comfortable after discharge.

38. Ninety-nine percent of patients said they would recommend YAG laser surgery after undergoing the procedure in an ASC.

39. Median pre-procedure time is 47 minutes for YAG laser surgeries, with a range of 18 to 75 minutes.

40. Median procedure time for YAG laser surgeries in ASCs is two minutes with a range of one to 11 minutes.

41. Median discharge time for cataract surgeries is six minutes.

Here are statistics on ophthalmology case mix by specialty from VMG Health's Multi-Specialty ASC Intellimarker 2018:

Orthopedics
The percentage of inpatient procedures decreased while the percentage of outpatient and ASC procedures increased, according to a Leerink Partners survey conducted in June.

Leerink surveyed 47 hospital administrators on bundled payments to create the report. Here are the percentages of outpatient procedures performed in the past 12 months, and the increase expected in the next 12 months:

VMG Health's 2018 Multi-Specialty ASC Benchmarking Study broke down ASC working capital as percentage of net revenue by region. The study is based on 2016 and 2017 data collected from over 275 centers, encompassing a surgical case volume of over 1.3 million.
