ASC numbers grew 82% as hospital numbers shrank — 6 figures to know

The number of hospitals in the U.S. was roughly equal to the number of ASCs in 2016, according to Healthcare Real Estate Insights.

Here are six numbers to know:

1. As of 2016, there were about 5,532 surgery centers and 5,534 hospitals.

2. Between 2000 and 2016, the number of surgery centers grew 82 percent and the number of hospitals decreased 5 percent.

3. The number of surgeries performed in the outpatient setting reached two-thirds, up 30 percent from 1990.

4. About 61 percent of ASCs are single-specialty, with gastroenterology, ophthalmology and pain management as the leading specialties.

5. The six largest ASC operators manage 20 percent of all surgery centers. Most ASCs are at least partially physician-owned, and 64 percent are entirely physician-owned. Twenty-nine percent are joint ventures. Just 7 percent of ASCs are entirely owned by a hospital or corporate provider.

6. An average ASC is 15,447 square feet with three operating rooms.
