Hospital employed physicians see 7% drop in compensation for 2018: 14 statistics to know

Surveys from Doximity and Merritt Hawkins examined independent and employed physician salary and recruitment trends.

Doximity's 2019 physician compensation report compares average salary differences among specialties, as well as how salaries have changed at different practice settings.

Doximity compiled the report from surveys completed by 90,000 licensed, full-time U.S. physicians who work at least 40 hours a week.

How salary differs among practice settings:

1. Single specialty group
2018 average compensation: $377,414
2017 average compensation: $373,240
Change: 1 percent increase

2. Solo practice
2018 average compensation: $366,967
2017 average compensation: $354,624
Change: 3 percent increase

3. Multispecialty group
2018 average compensation: $360,767
2017 average compensation: $355,972
Change: 1 percent increase

4. Health system/accountable care organization/integrated delivery network
2018 average compensation: $342,027
2017 average compensation: $341,444
Change: .017 percent increase

5. Industry / Pharmaceutical
2018 average compensation: $337,547

6. Hospital

Hospitals are the top search assignment setting, according to Merritt Hawkins' 2019 review of physician and advanced practitioner recruiting incentives.

Merritt Hawkins included a sample of 3,131 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments the company conducted for its clients from April 2018 to the end of March 2019.
