How physician compensation compares with productivity for 5 specialties

Pay and productivity varies between medical specialties, according to the 2019 Medical Group Compensation and Productivity Survey from the American Medical Group Association.

The AMGA included responses from 117,000 providers representing 272 medical groups in its survey. Productivity is measured in work relative value units.

How five physician specialties compare:

General cardiology
Compensation: 4.4 percent increase
Productivity: 1.8 percent increase

Dermatology
Compensation: 3.3 percent increase
Productivity: 1.6 percent increase

Gastroenterology
Compensation: 0.4 percent decrease
Productivity: 0.7 percent increase

Hospitalist
Compensation: 2.1 percent increase
Productivity: 1.1 percent increase

Psychiatry
Compensation: 15.6 percent increase
Productivity: 1.1 percent decrease

Medical specialties as a whole
Compensation: 3.39 percent increase
Productivity: 1.9 percent decrease
