How physician salary compares to revenue generated

Many of the highest paid physician specialties also generate the most revenue for hospitals, according to the 2019 inpatient/outpatient revenue survey from physician search firm Merritt Hawkins.

Merritt Hawkins emailed a survey to 3,000 hospital CFOs and other financial managers across the U.S. from October 2018 to December 2018 to compile its report.

How physician salary compares to revenue generated for the top 10 specialties:

1. Cardiovascular surgery
Average revenue: $3,697,916
Average salary: $425,000

2. Invasive cardiologists
Average revenue: $3,484,375
Average salary: $590,000

3. Neurosurgery
Average revenue: $3,437,500
Average salary: $687,000

4. Orthopedic surgery
Average revenue: $3,286,764
Average salary: $533,000

5. Gastroenterology
Average revenue: $2,965,277
Average salary: $487,000

6. Hematology/Oncology
Average revenue: $2,855,000
Average salary: $425,000

7. General surgery
Average revenue: $2,707,317
Average salary: $350,000

8. Internal medicine
Average revenue: $2,675,387

9. Pulmonology
