Physician compensation data for 5 major states

Nationally, specialist physicians earn $341,000 on average, and primary care physicians earn $237,000, according to salary data from Medscape.

Medscape outlined the average yearly salary for specialist and primary care physicians in five major states across the U.S. Medscape surveyed nearly 20,000 physicians to compile its reports.

How five states stacked up:

1. Florida
Specialist physicians: $358,000
Primary care physicians: $238,000

2. Texas
Specialist physicians: $343,000
Primary care physicians: $242,000

3. Pennsylvania
Specialist physicians: $337,000
Primary care physicians: $242,000

4. California
Specialist physicians: $334,000
Primary care physicians: $240,000

5. New York
Specialist physicians: $322,000
Primary care physicians: $224,000
