The 17 medical specialties that saw a pay increase or drop in 2019

Many medical specialties saw an increase in average pay this year, while a few saw a decrease, according to the Merritt Hawkins 2019 review of physician and advanced practitioner recruiting incentives.

Merritt Hawkins, a national healthcare consulting and recruiting firm, included a sample of 3,131 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments the company conducted for its clients from April 2018 to the end of March 2019.

How the salaries of 17 medical specialties changed this year:

1. Urology
2018/2019 salary: $464,000
2017/18 salary: $386,000
Difference in salary: 20 percent increase

2. Invasive cardiology
2018/2019 salary: $648,000
2017/18 salary: $590,000
Difference in salary: 9.8 percent increase

3. Anesthesiology
2018/2019 salary: $404,000
2017/18 salary: $371,000
Difference in salary: 20 percent increase

4. Emergency medicine
2018/2019 salary: $382,000
2017/18 salary: $358,000
Difference in salary: 8.5 percent increase

5. Neurology
2018/2019 salary: $317,000
2017/18 salary: $301,000
Difference in salary: 5.3 percent increase

6. Psychiatry
2018/2019 salary $273,000

7. Radiology
