The 'big business' of ASCs — 5 things to know

ASCs are "becoming big business," according to a new report from L.E.K. Consulting.

Five things to know:

1. In 2015, the ASC segment accounted for around 35 percent of surgeries and about 10 percent of surgical care revenue.

2. Performing a procedure in an ASC instead of a hospital outpatient department costs 60 percent less, on average.

3. Just 1 to 2 percent of ASCs are sold each year, and the transaction process is highly competitive.

4. In the coming years, ASCs will see an estimated same-store procedure growth of 4 percent per operating room.

5. About 20 percent of ASC volume is currently out of network, but L.E.K. expects half of that to move in-network within five years.
