What contributes most to burnout? — 10 insights

Medscape identified 10 elements contributing most to physician burnout in its National Physician Burnout, Depression & Suicide Report 2019.

 

Medscape surveyed 15,069 physicians in 29-plus specialties about suicide, burnout and depression.

Ten elements that most contribute to burnout:

1. Too many bureaucratic tasks: 59 percent
2. Spending too many hours at work: 34 percent
3. Increasing computerization of practices (EHRs): 32 percent
4. Lack of respect from administers/employees, colleagues or staff: 30 percent
5. Insufficient compensation/reimbursement: 29 percent
6. Lack of control/autonomy: 23 percent
7. Government regulations: 20 percent
8. Feeling like a cog in a wheel: 20 percent
9. Emphasis on profits over patient: 17 percent
10. Lack of respect from patients: 16 percent
