Salisbury, Md.-based TidalHealth Peninsula Regional successfully implanted the MitraClip during two procedures, the Salisbury Independent reports.

A multidisciplinary team implanted MitraClip devices in two separate procedures to treat mitral regurgitation of the heart.

The team was made up of cardiac surgeons James Todd, MD, and Fawad Khan, MD; cardiologists Steven Hearne, MD, and Abhishek Sawant, MD; and cardiac anesthesiologist Biswajit Ghosh, MD, with the assistance of physician assistant Steve Wilson.

The MitraClip device is an alternative for patients who cannot undergo open-heart surgery. Before the clip, patients could only rely on medical treatments to cope with their condition. The clip could reduce heart failure risk and related admissions to hospitals.
