The American Cancer Society has released estimates for colorectal cancer cases in the U.S. for 2024.
Colorectal cancer has become the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States, according to a January release.
Here are nine key statistics to know on colorectal cancer in the U.S. in 2024:
1. In 2024, there will be an estimated 106,590 new cases of colon cancer.
2. Of colon cancer diagnosis estimates, 54,210 are in men and 52,380 are in women.
3. There will be an estimated 46,220 new cases of rectal cancer.
4. Of rectal cancer diagnosis estimates, 27,330 are in men and 18,890 are in women.
5. The rate of people being diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer each year has dropped overall since the mid-1980s, likely because more people are getting screened and changing their lifestyles.
6. From 2011 to 2019, cancer rates dropped by about 1% each year.
7. In people younger than 55, however, rates have been increasing by 1% to 2% a year since the mid-1990s.
8. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 23 for men and 1 in 25 for women.
9. Colorectal cancer is expected to cause about 53,010 deaths during 2024.
