NCI recognizes Texas Tech's CRC screening program — 4 insights

The National Cancer Institute added Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso's screening program, Against Colorectal Cancer in Our Neighborhoods, into its Research-Tested Intervention Programs database.

Here's what you should know:

1. Providers around the world now have access to the program's instructional and educational materials.

2. Texas Tech's Navkiran Shokar, MD, launched ACCION in 2011. The community-based program sends physicians to churches, low-income housing complexes, food pantries, community centers and clinics to perform interventions.

3. The program aims to increase the screening rate in West Texas from about 50 percent to 70 percent.

4. The Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas has awarded ACCION several millions of dollars in funding.
