AAO creates patient guide for ophthalmologists fielding COVID-19 questions

The American Academy of Ophthalmology created a guide with answers to commonly asked questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Ophthalmologists should direct patients to guide available here. The guide:

  • Recommends patients avoid touching their eyes during the pandemic and consider switching from contacts to glasses
  • Advised that up to 2 percent of COVID-19 patients reported pink eye as a symptom of the disease
  • Advised patients to continue taking hydroxychloroquine to treat autoimmune conditions
  • Recommended patients call their ophthalmologists if they have an upcoming appointment
  • Recommended patients ensure they have refills of critical medicine 
  • Promoted home remedies as treatments for select non-urgent eye conditions
