1 year, 2.7K outpatient surgeries: How Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons is capitalizing on the shift to outpatient surgery

Southfield-based Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons is preparing for an "explosion" in the popularity of outpatient surgery in the coming years, according to Crain's Detroit Business.

Here are the key details to know:

1. The group of 44 surgeons performed an estimated 2,700 outpatient surgeries in 2018, up from 700 in 2017.

2. To keep pace with growing outpatient volume, Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons implemented athenahealth's EHR at all five of its locations to track outcomes, monitor costs and integrate care for patients.

3. Hospitals and payers are falling behind in the shift to outpatient surgery, but Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons plans to do more outpatient surgeries because employers want lower-cost surgery, Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons President Paul Fortin, MD, told Crain's Detroit Business
