AJRR publishes report on hip & knee arthroplasty outcomes, ASC participation dips — 5 takeaways

The American Joint Replacement Registry released its 2018 Annual Report on patient outcomes after hip and knee arthroplasty procedures, including those performed at ASCs.

Here's what you should know:

1. The annual report includes data on from 1,067 institutions, collected from 2012 to 2017. Out of the 1,186,955 cumulative procedures submitted, 2,074 were from ASCs.

"Major and minor teaching hospitals still supply the majority of procedural data to AJRR but ASCs will undoubtedly figure more prominently in future years," the report states.

2. AJRR and the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association formed a collaborative relationship to encourage ASCA member centers to register in AJRR. As of Dec. 31, 2017, 1,006 hospitals and ASCs and 61 private practice groups representing all 50 states and Washington, D.C., participated in the registry.

3. In 2017, the number of cases submitted from ASCs decreased from 1,069 to 811. The decrease may be explained by the loss of a submitting center from the registry, as well as a new data reporting platform and requirements.

4. It's difficult to evaluate larger trends due to changes in the number of centers enrolled and arthroplasty procedures per center, the AJRR report states.

5. Overall, 38 percent of the procedures performed by all centers were primary THA and 52.4 percent were primary TKA. There was a 38 percent increase in procedural volume year-over-year.

"The data collected by the AJRR will be used by ASCA and our members to support efforts to educate government and commercial payers of the safety, efficiency and good outcomes that result when ASCs perform these [hip and knee arthroplasty] procedures," said ASCA CEO William Prentice.
