Hospital for Special Surgery gets $3.5M donation to aid total knee replacement research

A $3.5 million donation from philanthropist Marina Kellen French and the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation will support research for total knee replacement procedures, according to an Oct. 26 press release.

The donation to New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery will be used for a research initiative to enable better patient outcomes from total knee replacements, the press release said. The research will be led by Thomas Sculco, MD, HSS' surgeon-in-chief emeritus and director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Complex Joint Reconstruction Center.

"The COVID-19 pandemic greatly curtailed this knee outcome research program and so many others, we are profoundly grateful for Marina's incredible support and the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation's commitment, which will catalyze new discoveries that will improve the lives of so many suffering from debilitating arthritic conditions and certainly improve the success of knee replacement surgery," Dr. Thomas said in a statement.
