Orthopedics and spine remain lucrative specialties for ASCs.

During a panel discussion at Becker's ASC Review 26th annual meeting, panelists discussed adding spine cases and recruiting surgeons to ASCs.

The panelists were:

- Tom Crossen, chief development officer for Regent Surgical Health

- Ali Prosser, CEO of San Luis Obispo (Calif.) Surgery Center

- Joy Taylor, chief administrative officer at Polaris Spine & Neurosurgery Center in Atlanta

Three things to know:

1. Technological advances in anesthesia, robotics and minimally invasive surgery have allowed more orthopedic and spine procedures to move to the outpatient setting.

2. More surgeons are expected to either start their own ASCs or buy into one as more high acuity cases move to the outpatient setting.

3. Letting patients know what to expect when undergoing outpatient surgery helps them prepare to go home hours afterward.
