Kam Momi, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a fellowship in spine surgery. He has a special interest in minimally invasive spine procedures and practices at Mt. Laurel, N.J.-based Coastal Spine.

Here, Dr. Momi discusses the big challenge for his practice today and best advice for surgeons entering the field.

Question: What is the biggest challenge your practice is facing today? How are you overcoming it?

Dr. Kam Momi: Recruiting new physicians is our biggest challenge. We have been looking at nontraditional sources of surgical revenue, for example vascular surgery.

Q: What are your top one or two goals for your practice over the next three to five years? How do you see it growing and developing?

KM: Our top goals are arranging for strategic partnerships with either a hospital or with other ASCs to form larger entities for potential buyout.

Q: What advice do you have for new orthopedic or spine surgeons just entering the field?

KM: Join an ASC as soon as possible after you begin practice. The profitability is still there although it is a mature field.
