Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., found a family of sensory nerve proteins known as piezo proteins are essential to the sensation of painful touch, according to a Scripps news release.
For the study, scientists conducted studies in fruit flies, which are a model system for the sensory nervous system of mammals. Future studies will focus on the role of piezo proteins in sensing sound, blood pressure and related stimuli that press or stretch cell membranes.
