Study: Painkillers More Effective With Added Caffeine

Caffeine can improve painkiller effectiveness by a small margin, according to a new Cochrane Library study reported in the Health Behavior News Service.

Researchers examined past pain treatment studies comparing patients who received a dose of analgesic to patients who received the dose plus a standard amount of caffeine. Results showed that the latter group of patients was significantly more likely to experience a higher level of pain relief.

Data shows that an additional five to 10 percent of patients who took the analgesic plus caffeine experienced at least 50 percent of the maximum possible pain relief over four to six hours.
