In the midst of drug shortages, Nephron Pharmaceuticals partnered with UPS to help medications reach U.S. hospitals and surgery centers, according to a video published by WSJ Custom Studios.
Four insights:
1. In 2017, Nephron formed a new division to make sterile, injectable medications that could help providers overcome drug shortages. "I heard about stories of hospitals having to delay surgeries and defer surgeries because of drug shortages," Nephron CIO Hank Jibaja said.
2. Nephron partnered with UPS because its healthcare team had experience with the challenges of delivering pharmaceuticals.
3. UPS helped Nephron develop the materials needed to maintain proper temperature throughout the 48-hour delivery process.
4. In the first month that Nephron's new division was established, it handled about $5,000 in orders. In January 2019, UPS delivered more than $11 million worth of products from the division. Nephron currently serves upwards of 3,000 U.S. hospitals.
